A Dedicated Reader

Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Fast asleep with her head literally in her in book. Have I shared with you, dear reader, when JW was asking about what the word 'literally' means? We went back and forth a bit trying to get to the bottom of it and it eventually clicked. She turned to me and said 'So, I literally don't know what literally means'. Gold.

Doppelganger

Monday, March 30, 2015

Mr Duyvken got this card from a friend for his birthday. In one of those weird little twists of life it really hits the mark. I have only been mistaken for someone 'famous' once in my life and they have a Mr Bean link.
I was standing on Central Station one afternoon on my way home from uni when a guy approached me and asked, sheepishly, if I was the actress who played Mr Bean's girlfriend. I didn't even know Mr Bean had a girlfriend and, before Google, how was one to easily find these things out?
A couple if year's later I was watching tv and one of the Irma Gobb episodes came on. There she was. Mr Bean's girlfriend. And you know what? I did look a lot like her!
Not flattering, but fair. Do you remember those doppelganger memes where everyone shares which famous person they look like and everyone looks like Reese Witherspoon or Liv Tyler or Esperanza Spalding? Not me, dear reader.

Awwww....

My Big and My Little

G and Duckling reading Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd. What a lovely way to pass an afternoon.

Good Morning

Saturday, March 28, 2015

We're having a party tonight to celebrate Mr Duyvken's birthday and there are still lots of things to do so I am going to need a cup or two of coffee to help me through the day. It is hard to believe that this gorgeous little fellow is nearly 40 year's old.
This photo captures the beginning of his lifelong love of ice-cream. He stills grins like that now when he finds almond magnums in the freezer.

Duckling Dozes

Getting ready for family movie night. I don't think she'll make it, her lids are heavy and her breathing's light.

Coffee with Oma

Thursday, March 26, 2015

One of my favourite photos of 2015. Oma is much loved by the littlest duckling.
Oma isn't tall but she's not quite as short as this photo suggests. I like the miniaturisation effect of the tall counter, the beautiful way Oma is dressed and the duckling reaching out for her.

New Chair

Thursday, March 19, 2015

This is my dad's desk. He and mum bought it in California in the late '70s when he was studying for his C.Phil at UCLA. It is a gorgeous desk and I feel very lucky to have it. The new chair hits the right mid-century danish design note even though it is mass produced in Vietnam. J sits here to do his homework and it makes me very happy to see him sitting here furiously scribbling away.

Out the Back

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

A clothesline full of washing and a kookaburra sitting on the rusting netball hoop that's hammered into one of the gums in the backyard. Sydney much?

Kid Stitch

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

More sewing from C. The trick is making sure she takes only from the 'scrap' pile and not the 'pieces I need pile'.

Barista Baby

Monday, March 16, 2015

Just another typical Sydney toddler.

Grey and Tan

Quilting

Happily stitching my way towards a finished quilt, one star at a time.

Vice

Fence painting fuel.
Such is the state of health fanaticism among some family members that drinking this is akin to mainlining heroin.
Thankfully Aunty S and Aunty B are around to drink with me.

Thank you

Flowers from my mum for driving her around a bit last week. Unnecessary but beautiful.

In the Garden

Monday, March 09, 2015

We have been pottering in the garden working on one little spot at a time. After a couple of years of doing this things are starting to look nearly *gasp* finished. Last weekend the kids and I planted some herbs in the bed along one fence and I got a couple of pots for the bay tree and the curry tree. I was able to divide our mondo grass plants to use as edging along the vegie patch and mulched using chips from a couple of stumps that were ground in this spot. It was a very pleasant way to spend a weekend.
Let the battle with the possums and the brush turkeys begin!

The way my new bag looks hanging on my bedroom door is very pleasing.

On the Hall Table

Things gathered from the yard; junk mail, gum tree gems and assorted sticks.

Sweetie Turned 4

Friday, March 06, 2015

On the last day of February 2 things happened. Sweetie celebrated his 4th birthday and my camera stopped working. Apparently there is an amazing camera store in NYC but, of course, we didn't end up going there because time was limited and none of us really needed anything. Fingers crossed that wasn't a mistake. I have taken it in to the service centre and now am waiting for the repair quote.

South West

Thursday, March 05, 2015

We had an unforgettable time in NYC and, hopefully, one day I'll be back to do and see even more but when our week and a half was over we happily turned to the south west and let our hearts lead us home.

Superstitious

Tuesday, March 03, 2015

My mum was very keen that on our first day in NYC we visit St Pat's Cathedral to light a candle. I think she thought that if we did that the rest of the trip would be OK. So we did and it was. I don't think the two things are linked but it never hurts to keep your mama happy.
I hope the little duyvkens are taking notes.

Favourites

Magnolia by James J Shannon.

Veselkas ukrainian diner in the East Village. I'd love a citrus salad and some potato cakes right now, or maybe a plate of pirogis.

 Rosa Mexicano.

FAO Schwarz. This one's for you Kris.

There are so many other good things that I don't have photos of; cupcakes, chocolate chunk cookies, fries with every meal, soup and half sandwich lunches, meeting the wonderful Blackbird for lunch (the most stylish person you can imagine, I felt like such a slob sitting next to her), everything bagels, flagels with cream cheese, dinners with my cousin, cheesecake, spending 20 hours in Atlanta visiting Mr Duyvken's sister and her family and spending so much time with my sweet G.
