Hand stitching

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

My love affair with striped binding is well documented and seems to be ongoing. My AG2R quilt is nearly finished. I am very happy with how it's come together. I'll share more photos when I tie off the final stitch.

Now that's a thank you note.

Autumn

I've been looking forward to the cooler weather. But now that it's here, I think I've changed my mind.

Chocolate Chip

Thursday, March 17, 2016

I might have finally found a cookie recipe I like. This is both good and bad. Here's the chocolate chip version that I made for the open day at school last week. The white chocolate and macadamia ones I made this week were even better. They don't last long but they're delicious.
***
125g unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg (beaten)
1 1/2 cups plain flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
Bake for 12-14mins at 180C

Beat the butter and the sugar together until pale (takes 3-4mins), add the egg and vanilla extract, beat again and then the flour and baking powder. Mix well, stir through the chocolate/nuts/dried fruit and drop balls onto a lined baking tray.
Bake for 12-14mins at 180C.

Edited to add: you can add anything you like in a bikkie to this base. The ones in the photo have about a cup of chopped chocolate (milk and dark) stirred through the batter. 1/2 cup of chopped macadamias and 1/2 a cup of chopped white chocolate is also delicious.

Another Trip to Bunnings

And that, dear reader, is when we ran out of paint.

Artisanal Quilting (that's not really a thing)

Saturday, March 12, 2016

The AG2R quilt top has been finished for a while now and, despite sandwiching it, pin basting it and leaving it lying around those little elves haven't turned up to finish it for me.
Mr Duyvken is sleeping in preparation for a big ride tomorrow and I have a Midsomer Murders episode to watch and G to keep me company while I try to get this quilted and bound tonight. You can see that I use the traditional yet little seen pizza board and pencil method of quilt marking. We are form believers in the ancient arts chez Duyvken.

Glitter

Thursday, March 10, 2016

There are a few moments at the end of each day when the back of the house is flooded with sunlight. The room fills with golden light. Every mote is visible as it floats and flits on the currents of air swirling around us. I feel like we are underwater in these moments. The big windows across the back become an aquarium wall and we are freed from our suburban anchor and are adrift in a wide expanse of sea. Quiet, slow moving, protective and warm. We find ourselves in a Phoebe Rudomino photograph and then, after just a few fantastical minutes it is over. Crisp light, bright shadow and sound returns. Brief but beautiful, like so much that is wonderful in life.
